Landscaping operations

Operations Manager for Landscaping Companies

By Cole Kline, Founder, Edge Operations Managers

A landscaping operations manager runs crews, routes, maintenance and install schedules, equipment and seasonal hiring so the owner isn't on the trailer every morning. The role usually fits owner-led landscape and lawn care companies of 10–50 people that run maintenance routes alongside install or enhancement work.

What the OM owns in landscaping

Route planning and crew assignments, morning yard-out process, maintenance vs. install/enhancement scheduling, equipment maintenance and downtime, seasonal hiring and onboarding, quality checks, weather reschedules, snow (if offered).

Document these 5 SOPs first

If you're writing your first SOPs, start with the landscaping jobs that come up every week and pull you in when they go wrong:

  1. Setting up a new maintenance account
  2. Building and routing weekly crew schedules
  3. Running a crew's morning yard-out: truck, equipment and safety check
  4. Doing a job quality walk and handling a client complaint
  5. Making the seasonal changeover (maintenance to projects or snow)

Write each one as the steps your best person already follows. The free EDGEos Playbook template above gives you a format to use (get it here).

Signs you need one

You run yard-out every morning; hours run over budget and no one knows why; spring hiring starts too late every year.
